Leaked Photo Said to Show iPad 3 Retina Display

On Friday, an image surfaced online that shows what is purported to be the next generation iPad's display.

Before going any further, it must be noted that this unverified photo comes from a Korean Apple forum and has since turned up on several Apple news related websites in the United States. As we've seen countless times in the past before new Apple product launches, "leaked photos" are very common. Sometimes they are legit. Often times, they are not.

So this latest leak must, indeed, be taken with a grain of salt, as a great deal of doubt remains about whether the iPad 3 will, in fact, feature Retina Display.

The image in question was shared in the absence of any accompanying information. However, the photo, which apparently aims to compare second and third generation iPad screens, indicates that there are now three ribbon cables affixed to the new component (in other words, we have a new configuration). It is implied, but not stated, that the additional cable exists to give the iPad 3 all the juice it needs to deliver quality resolutions comparable to Retina display.

Current projections call for the iPad 3 to be unveiled and launched sometime during the first quarter of 2011.
